Bangladesh

Bangladesh, one of the most densely populated countries in South Asia with over 170 million people, faces persistent challenges despite economic growth.

Geographical characteristics make Bangladesh the 7th most affected country in the world by extreme weather events and other environmental shocks driven by climate change.

Bangladesh is a nation of resilience, creativity, and deep humanity.

Many households remain vulnerable, relying on agriculture and informal work while coping with frequent climate shocks like floods, cyclones, and river erosion.

Women, children, and adolescents are most affected, experiencing school dropout, child marriage, youth unemployment, and limited access to life skills, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHA), and mental health services.

Our approach and focus areas

Strømme Foundation supports these communities, promoting resilience, opportunity, and social inclusion across Bangladesh.

  • The target groups are vulnerable families, women, youth, adolescents and children from unprivileged rural poor and marginalised ethnic communities.
  • Target communities will increase their resilience to climate change while reducing the emission of greenhouse gases and conserving biodiversity.

For the 2024-2028 strategic period, we are partnering with local organisations and other private sector partners to strengthen the resilience of poor and marginalised communities in six districts in Rangpur and Mymensingh Divisions, in the North of Bangladesh.

Our Key Programmes

We have two main Programme interventions:

Community Based Organisations (CBOs)

CBOs are acting as representative advocacy bodies, enabling access to technical and financial support from the government and taking the lead on development of local Disaster Risk Reduction Plans.

CBOs create awareness of climate change adaptation strategies and serve as social safety nets. Through capacity building on leadership, finance, governance, and advocacy, they are supported to register with local government authorities.
